There are three types of wedding day timelines. The first is your “day-of” timeline, typically drafted by your wedding coordinator or reception venue, and outlines when your day starts, when it ends, and all the excitement in between. The day-of timeline schedules when your hair & makeup kicks off, when vendors arrive to set up, the meal order, and last call. The second type of timeline is the “photography timeline”, curated by me, noting when portraits will be taken, the plan for group shots, and which reception highlights I’ll be sticking around to capture. Lastly, there’s the third timeline, which isn’t a written timeline at all. Instead, this timeline unfolds in real-time as the moments truly happen, more or less reflecting the two written timelines, but giving your celebration the grace to breathe and become the day it was meant to be.

Flexibility is key to enjoying a wedding day. Running a bit late here, changing the order of the toasts there. It’s like the old adage from Picasso: you need to know the rules before you break them. Have your plans in place on paper, but then give them the space to grow and the slack to bend when needed. After all, who wants to know exactly how everything is going to be? It’s those surprises you might just cherish the most.

Alex & Steven were such a treat to work with, their demeanor always so pleasant and welcoming to everyone taking part in their wedding. Their ceremony and reception were held at The Bournedale Function Facility along Great Herring Pond in Plymouth, MA. Our timeline surprise was an opportunity to stroll the docks and hop in a boat for some pictures on the water — not at all planned and one of the highlights of the day!
