Rockport Halibut Point State Park Couples Session

ROCKPORT FAMILY + COUPLES PHOTOGRAPHER

Driving from Rowley to Rockport that early morning — the thick fog obscuring the road — I knew this portrait session would offer something different. Our selected session location was Halibut Point State Park, and on clear days, the park’s granite quarry frames fantastic views of the Atlantic just beyond. But on this morning, there were no blue skies to be found. Instead, we were given the gift of the fog, erasing all views of the ocean and instead reimagining the quarry as an endless mountain vista whose sight lines disappeared into the white horizon.

Yes, it’s true. Haze, clouds, and fog can be a natural light photographer’s best friend, particularly on morning shoots along the coast. Instead of working under the harsh cast of a blazing sun, the fog diffuses the light, creating a beautiful, soft aesthetic. Shadows are opened and highlights are tamed. Rather than us having to limit our choice of backgrounds to those that keep the sun out of your eyes, a cloudy morning makes all backgrounds fair game.

M+J were visiting New England from down South, and I thought a hike through Rockport’s Halibut Point would give them a memorable peek at our unique terrain. From flowering meadows and rustic barns, to the rocky shores and crashing waves, we enjoyed an hour together, our journey taking us to the water’s edge just as the sun burned through the fog.

So remember, if you wake up the morning of your photo session, and it’s clouds you see instead of sun, don’t despair. A beautiful day of picture-taking awaits us!
