Borderland State Park Family Maternity Portrait Session
NEWBURYPORT FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER
When it comes to family portrait sessions, one of the biggest questions parents have is how well will their little one do when it comes to having their picture taken over the course of thirty to sixty minutes. Will their son or daughter loose interest too fast? Will they misbehave, fidget, fuss, have a tantrum, or not stay still? These concerns run the gamut from newborn to teenager, and I find there are a few keys to having a successful session that everyone enjoys.
With this family maternity session at Borderland State Park in North Easton, MA, their little girl was a delight to work with from the get-go, and as with all sessions, it’s important to establish a connection right away with the children in attendance. To kids, I’m a stranger with a camera, so I communicate playfully and often with them, not only to build trust, but to let them know it’s okay to be themselves. Sure, we will photograph the traditional family portraits where all are posed and smiling at the camera, but my portrait work primarily celebrates natural, unposed moments, which is right up a kid’s alley. Let them run, jump, and lead — or at least think they are leading. Where they go, I will follow, and through gentle guidance, I’ll still direct them to moments and activities that bear memorable images. Great pictures result from a child’s curiosity, wonder, and energy, so loose posing works best rather than telling children to “do this and that”. Also, sharing peeks of how they look on camera or asking them to suggest a pose invites children to be part of the creative process and eager to participate and engage.
And yes, as a dad, I know kids sometimes have bad days. So please know it’s okay to take a time-out during a shoot to regroup. Rest and a snack prior to the shoot goes a long way to keeping children content and wards off them checking out too soon. Most importantly, as parents, remember not to worry too much about how the kids are performing during a session and instead enjoy yourself. Encourage laughs, being silly, hugs, and love. From there, great pictures will come.
