What month are senior portraits usually taken? A great question from a recent client inquiry curious as to when it’s best to book her daughter’s senior portraits. The initial, general answer would be: anytime of the year you’d like! I’ve actually photographed senior sessions all throughout the seasons… from the warmer days of summer right through those chillier months when there’s snow on the ground. The determining factor really comes down to what wardrobe you’d like to wear (layers vs. light & airy attire) and your preferred background (sandy beach, fall foliage, winter wonderland).

That said, most senior bookings are scheduled from about late August through November. The coast is still warm in late August and September, yet without the humidity, greenheads, and crowds. Then, of course, there’s the very popular autumn colors in October, after the heat has passed, and it’s comfortable once again to mix and match cozier threads. The days also shift shorter into autumn, allowing us to schedule the session a bit earlier in the afternoon, as we will typically want to start shooting an hour or two prior to sunset for the best natural light. Another reason students choose to book the August-November timeframe is they are now just starting their senior year, and it’s that very excitement you would love to capture in the photographs. Also keep in mind schools will often have their deadline in place for your photo to be submitted to the yearbook by year’s end.

This wonderful session was photographed on the beaches and sand dunes of Plum Island back in mid-September, and the vibe is still very much summertime.
